I have been volunteering in Waumba Land for about five years. Before that, I served young children as a speech pathologist since 1981. I have always loved serving children.
In 2004, I lost my voice to a neurological disorder called laryngeal dystonia. My brain does not always communicate well with my vocal folds, so my voice can be strained or cut out. This caused a major disruption in my life, and I had to quit my job. I had faith that God had a plan for me. Jeremiah 29:11 was the verse I claimed. I recovered my voice and developed a new career working with voice patients, eventually worldwide.
I had a huge hole in my heart when I no longer had daily interaction with children, so I started volunteering in the church nursery/preschool program over 10 years ago. We moved to Decatur City Church during the pandemic, and the preschool program was one of the factors that led us here.
I am mostly retired from my voice practice due to a regression in my voice, but the children do not even seem to notice. They are such a blessing to me. God has blessed me through my voice challenges in many ways and serving in Waumba Land is one of them!
You are Made For More, too. Volunteering in our church is one way you can discover the more you are made for. Ready to find out what you were made for?
